Brazil: Insetting Coffee with Biochar
CarbonPilot streamlines insetting from biochar in coffee supply chain.

NEW YORK, NY (March 14, 2025) — CarbonPilot, an end-to-end carbon project management platform, is announcing a collaboration with NKG Stockler, DSS+, and Nespresso SA to implement a biochar insetting program across selected pilot coffee farms. The partnership aims to quantify, verify, and certify carbon removal credits within Nespresso's supply chain using CarbonPilot's insetting management platform.
The program will enable precise tracking of biochar production and application across multiple coffee farms, with the resulting carbon removal benefits claimed as verified insets by Nespresso. CarbonPilot's software will track biochar project sites from end-to-end during the pilot phase, representing a significant step toward decarbonizing coffee supply chains.
CarbonPilot's digital MRV platform ensures that every tonne of carbon removal is accurately measured, verified, and certified, eliminating concerns about greenwashing while streamlining the entire certification process.
The initiative addresses multiple sustainability challenges in coffee production, converting agricultural waste into biochar that both sequesters carbon and improves soil health. This reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers while providing a durable form of carbon storage that can last for centuries.
Under the program, CarbonPilot will progressively onboard three pilot farms between January and August 2025, tracking biochar production data through their mobile and web applications. In September, following biochar application training conducted jointly with DSS+, the verified carbon removal credits will be issued through Carbon Standards International and retired by Nespresso as insets.
Investing in carbon removal within Nespresso's own supply chain enables them to verifiably reduce their scope 3 emissions. The ability to accurately track and verify these benefits is essential to maintaining the integrity of our sustainability commitments.
NKG will oversee supply chain integration and project management across the participating farms, while DSS+ provides technical consulting and biochar expertise. CarbonPilot's platform offers both a mobile application for farm operators and a web dashboard for comprehensive carbon removal tracking and reporting.
This project demonstrates the potential for integrating carbon removal practices directly into agricultural supply chains. CarbonPilot's built in digital MRV simplifies compliance and creates transparency that benefits everyone from farmers to end consumers.
The initial pilot phase will establish a framework for expanding the program to additional farms, with the potential to significantly scale carbon removal efforts across the global coffee industry.
